The toco toucan, with its huge orange beak, is one of the most recognisable birds in the world. In Planet Zoo 2 it's perfect for a small indoor South America house. Its bright beak stands out against green foliage, so guests spot it easily.

Indoor aviary

Toucans can live fully indoors in a fairly small space:

  • Plenty of perches to glide between.
  • Lots of tropical foliage.
  • A roof. The habitat roof tool works indoors too.
  • A backstage area for health checks and meal prep. A monitor and a food prep area make it feel real.

Breeding

Toucans breed in spring. Give them nesting options and keep the group calm.

Sharing with tamarins

Toucans have a neutral relationship with golden lion tamarins, so they can share a house. The tamarins use the climbing frames while the toucans fly overhead.

A complete South America house

My favourite small build:

  1. A toucan and tamarin indoor habitat with lots of greenery.
  2. Two frog terrariums (exhibits) in the same building, so there's always something to see.
  3. A backstage area behind the habitat.
  4. Custom staff uniforms in matching colours for a polished look.

Education

Toucans scored 4 out of 5 for education coverage in one of my zoos. To get the last point, add a talking display stand or another education board near the habitat. Bird evolution boards fit well.

Tips

  • Toucans are a small habitat with a big visual payoff. Great for filling a corner of a tropical area.
  • South America has fewer animals in the base game than other continents, so toucans and tamarins are worth building around.
