Springbok are small, fast antelope that look great in a big herd. They're cheap, they mix well with other African grazers, and they're useful for reserve releases. There's just one rule that trips almost everyone up the first time: only one adult male per group.
The one-male rule
The Zoopedia says springbok live in groups of 3 to 36, with males and females. That sounds like you can buy a mixed herd. You can't. The habitat group only allows one adult male. If you buy more, the social tab goes red and the whole herd's welfare drops.
What to do if it happens:
- Open the social tab and find your best male (highest appeal and good traits).
- Send the other adult males to the trade centre.
- Quick trade them for a bit of cash back, or keep young males for a release group.
Building the habitat
Springbok are easy once the group is right:
- Grass and long grass. They like a mix. Long grass also looks great with a herd running through it.
- More terrain variety. When my springbok said the habitat was too small, part of the fix was extra terrain area and better ground paint.
- Enrichment. They want a little, even though they're not a "toy" species. A few feeders and a toy or two is enough.
- Drinking water that stays clean.
The barrier needs to stop a jumping antelope. Check the Zoopedia for the exact height and fence grade.
Mixed habitats
Springbok fit right into a mixed savanna with:
- Plains zebras
- Black wildebeest
- Cape buffalo
- Later on, giraffes
Each of these species has its own social rules, so check the social tab for every species after you add a new one.
Release groups
A mixed release group for springbok is 3 males + 6 females. That's one of the bigger release groups in the game, so you'll need a few breeding seasons of babies before you can put one together. Start breeding early if you're aiming for a Great Rift Valley release.
Tips
- On the market, the cheapest springbok often come with weak traits. Spend a little more on one good male.
- A big springbok herd fills a lot of habitat space. Keep an eye on the "habitat too small" alert as babies arrive.
